Ancients

The Ancients were a race of beings, closely resembling humans, capable of very impressive acts. The Ancients built ships for faster than light travel between planets and galaxies, though they later constructws the Stargate system for ease of use. Many of the technologies used by the Goa'uld are second-rate, bastardized versions of Ancient technology.

The Ancients organized the the four-race alliance, joining with the Asgard, the Nox, and the Furlings for mutual benefit. When they were almost annihilated by a plague, the entire Ancient race ascended to near-omnipotence on another plane of existence.

While Ancient scientific knowledge greatly surpassed that of even the modern Asgard, the Ancients were not a militarized people and so lagged behind somewhat in the application of combat technology, at least as compared to modern Asgard forces. What weapons the Ancients did employ are quite impressive, however.

The Ancients are, essentially, the first humans. While they did not evolve on Earth, they did begin directing Earthly life toward the evolution of Terran humans. This began perhaps thirty million years ago, or about ten times as long as recognizable human ancestors have been present in the fossil record. Humans are thus not descended directly from the Ancients, but are basically a reiteration of the Ancient species.
