Arachnid

One of the original hive minds in science fiction, the Arachnids were insectoid alien organisms which, as a vast collective, originally represented the 'communist menace.'

The Arachnids in SST are an intelligent space-faring species, with interstellar starships, various weapons, nuclear devices, and so on, whose sphere of influence has intersected with that of humanity. Being carbon-based themselves, they want more or less the same sorts of resources and worlds that people do.

As the original hive-mind insectoids, they have inspired many later works, with insectoid or quasi-insectoid hive swarms having become something of a staple in modern science fiction.

It should be noted that the 'Bugs' from the movie version of SST seem larger and more primitive than those portrayed in the novel.
