2nd Technician Arnold Judas Rimmer

Arnold Judas Rimmer, or Arnold J Rimmer SSc BSc as he prefers to be called is Dave Listers companion on board the Red Dwarf.

Rimmer is an uptight company man, a person who wished to have a career as an officer and a gentleman despite the fact that he had neither the personality or brains to do so.

What makes Rimmer's frustration even worse is that he had three brothers, John, Howard and Frank. Each of his brothers also had joined the Space Corps and had sterling careers. One of them was in the Space Corps Test Pilot corps.

Rimmer's authority on board Red Dwarf extended to being head of Z shift, the crew that did all the important work like cleaning out the gunk in the Chicken Soup machines. Rimmer's inability to do any real work of any responsibility is highlighted when it was shown that he was indirectly responsible for the deaths of the crew of the Red Dwarf by not properly sealing a faulty drive plate.

Rimmer and Lister unfortunately had to share a room which was a recipe for disaster as neither could get on with the other and they were basically totally opposite with their outlooks on life.

Rimmer also likes to sneer at Lister's crush on Kristine Kochanski but he knows that he is no casanova himself. His sole time that he had a sexual encounter was with Carol McGruder, the ships boxing champion (and she had concussion at the time). The whole experience lasted 12 minutes and that included how long it took to eat the pizza. This state of affairs continued until the Red Dwarf's encounter with the Holoship Enlightenment and his brief romance with Commander Nirvanah Crane.

Up until recently Rimmer was not able to touch anything due to his hologramatic status, but recently he was upgraded to a hard light hologram which gave him a true physical presence.

Rimmer has a fascination for military history and seems to have a rather distorted view of what war is really like. He sees himself in the mould of one of Napoleons Marshals in a campaign tent sipping vintage wine. The idea that the reality of war is people getting various horrific wounds inflicted on them never seems to enter his mind.
