Avalon Class Battlecruiser

When the Clan Invasion started, the Inner Sphere found itself in the uneviable position of having very few servicable warships. Most jumpships were the basic dropship transporters, which although armed would be ill matched against some of the dedicated warship designs the Clans still fielded. To this end, design work started throughout the Inner Sphere on various new shipbuilding projects. Some of these designs would be successful, others wouldn't and the retrieval of the Memory Core by the Gray Death Legion some years before made matters easier.

The Avalon class Battlecruiser was the AFFC's earlier projects, though it was delayed for some years. The first thing that was needed was an upgrading of present facilities for shipbuilding and repair. These would be the yards at Galax, Kathil and New Syrtis.

While the Avalon was on the drawing board, the design changed somewhat as new technologies were developed and certain other needs were foreseen. One of the most unusual elements of the Avalon design eventually was the idea to make it into a missile cruiser, plus it would be designed to operate as part of a task force rather than alone or even as a small detachment. It's fuel capacity is way beyond what is needed for the ship itself, this is so it can refuel other vessels in a task force. Due to the tactic that the Avalon would operate as part of a taskforce, the point defence weaponry is rather sparse for a ship of its size, it's weaponry instead being dedicated more towards anti-ship duties.

The primary armament consists of six Class 45 Naval lasers, six, class 20 Naval Autocannons, fourteen class 10 AR Launchers, three Screen launchers, twelve Exostar Large Lasers, sixteen Medium Pulse lasers, twenty one point defense anti-missile systems, twenty six Arbalest Class 15 LRM launchers, slaved with Artemis IV Fire Control Systems, three Naval Autocannon class 40's. Also carried are eight medium Naval Gauss rifles, 2 class 55 naval laser and 4 LB 10-X class autocannons.

Despite this impressive armament the class suffered heavy losses in the Fedcom civil war.
