Babylon 5: Thirdspace
Overview
The second Babylon 5 TV movie to be filmed for TNT, Thirdspace was made as part of the season 4 production run.
Plot Synopsis
Lyta begins experiencing visions of a devastated Babylon 5 station when a mysterious and huge artifact is towed out of hyperspace. Shortly afterwards, an IPX expedition arrives seeking to investigate the artifact.
Sheridan allows the team's leader, Doctor Elizabeth Trent, access to the artifact under the condition that she gives him all the information she unearths.
Meanwhile, elsewhere on the station, people begin to exhibit odd behaviour, such as surrounding one of the IPX team and silently watching him eat. Zack can't find any explanation for it, but orders his teams to keep an eye on everything.
Trent makes a breakthrough and theorises that the artifact is a gate to another layer of space, beyond hyperspace, which she nicknames Thirdspace. She believes travel through Thirdspace is instantaneous, and it would be a massive breakthrough for humanity if they could harness the technology. She orders a power source to be connected to the artifact, after which it begins to power itself up.
Around the same time, the station loses power, and Sheridan orders all fighters launched before power fails completely.
The artifact activates, opening a gate and powering up a shield, preventing the starfuries from damaging it. As White Star and Minbari reinforcements arrive, ships being emerging from the artifact. Sheridan and Delenn meet with Lyta to see if she has any leftover Vorlon knowledge about the device. Finding her apparently under the control of leftover Vorlon programming, Lyta implants information directly into Sheridan's mind.
Sheridan then retrieves a nuclear device from the station's stores and heads out in a space suit. While friendly forces focus their fire on the artifacts shields, he is able to sneak through a weak point on the opposite side and enter it. After a brush with some large aliens guarding the interior, Sheridan plants the nuke and escapes. The resulting blast destroys the artifact, and closes the gate to Thirdspace.
