Babylon Squared

When one of the station's Starfuries returns on autopilot with it's occupant dead, Commander Sinclair is presented with a mystery: the pilot's internal organs are extremely aged, and a final message from him indicates that he encountered the missing Babylon 4 station, lost many years ago.

After a distress call is recieved, also apparently from Babylon 4, Sinclair, Garibaldi and a fleet of relief ships head over to render assistance. Upon arrival, however, Sinclair finds out that the crew have somehow skipped the four years that the station has been missing, and are as much in the dark as the Babylon 5 crew.

This episode left fans in no doubt that Babylon 5 was not only following an episodic format. While previous episodes had dangled a few loose plot threads, there wasn't the feeling of a cohesive plot arc just yet. Other science fiction TV series of the time would occasionally step outside their episodic format, and follow-up earlier stories (for example, Star Trek: The Next Generation's occasional Borg episodes, as well as Picard's recovery from their treatment of him in Family), and there was little reason to expect different from Babylon 5. However, Babylon 4's surprise ending left an enormous question behind that begged for a follow-up.
