Beneath the Planet of the Apes

The sequel to Planet of the Apes follows on from the previous film, but instead diverges from the story of Colonel Taylor, as played by Charlton Heston. Heston was unavailable for the sequel full time but consented to a bit part.

A second space mission crash lands on the planet, one that was in search of Colonel Taylor and his crew. Astronaut Brent is the only survivor, and like Taylor also encounters Ape City and its attitudes towards humans. He later escapes and scouts underground making an amazing discovery, mutants who worship a nuclear weapon.
