Cameron Class Battlecruiser

The Cameron Class Battlecruiser is an SLDF vintage design which was expected to be a compromise vessel between a cruiser and battleship, fast and powerful, while able to avoid those it could not defeat.

Dassault-Shimmon Enterprises of New Earth was awarded the contract, and the initial vessel took eleven years to build. Unfortunately, the new design was substantially over weight, negating the intended speed advantage. Indeed, it could not even achieve half of its original design acceleration. Nonetheless, for some reasons, the SLDF pressed ahead and ordered more of these vessels to be built, this perhaps could be explained away with the fact that there were severe budgetary constraints on the SLDF at this time and the Admiralty could ill afford to admit failure as capital ship design was one of the most expensive parts of the SLDF budget.

The Cameron's weapons and armor did live up to expectations which in part seemed to vindicate the admiralty. There were sixteen Class 25 Naval Autocannons in the broadsides. The ships for and aft were covered by 12 heavy Naval PPC's, making it difficult for enemy craft to close in. Eight Maelstrom AR-10 missile launchers provided the Cameron with an anti fighter defense network.

The Cameron's credibility suffered however, when the SLS Saint Joan was destroyed by pirates in ramshackle converted merchant craft. The Cameron's primary power grid failed and when the captain tried to use auxiliary power, he found that both life support and weapons could not be engaged at the same time, thereby making the Saint Joan an easy target.

Clan techs have modified their Camerons somewhat but even this modification after so many years fails to address the problems the class has.
