Centauri Republic

The Centauri Republic, once known as The Lion of the Galaxy is a power in decline. Once their Empire spanned the stars but their day is long past. The Centauri seem at first to resemble humans in some ways, except for the hairstyles, but their biology is very different. For example, they have have no major arteries in the wrists and their reproductive system is quite different.

However, this basic similiarity in appearance made relations with the Earth Alliance a lot easier when the Centauri made first contact with them.

The Centauri once shared their world with another species known as the Xon. The two races fought a bitter war in their early history and this event is commemerated every year in a lavish party to celebrate the Centauri's survival, and also as an excuse to get raging drunk.

The Centauri are ruled by an Emperor, although sometimes the Emperor has been little more than a figurehead for the Centaurum, who are the political body made up of all the great houses of the Republic. To a male Centauri life is a constant struggle, both to try and advance one's house and themselves. Alliances between house can change but there are some that have lasted for centuries. The recent rise of Emperor Cartagia strengthened the power of the Imperial throne and at the same time weakened the Centaurum. After Cartagia's death, the Centaurum don't seem too keen to have too ambitious an Emperor.

Male Centauri are identifiable by their hair which rises in a crest shape. Usually the larger the crest, the higher the social and political position of the Centauri, although fashions have changed and some male centauri prefer a shorter style. Female Centauri have little status in their society, they are bald, though sometimes they have a braid, a fashion which is especially popular among younger Centauri females.

The Centauri are one of the races that actively use telepaths for a wide variety of purpose from anything like commercial dealings, to military and industrial espionage. There seems to be no oversight body with as strict a set of rules as the Earth based Psi Corps. Telepaths do belong to a Guild however, so it is assumed that there will be rules of conduct. The Emperor also has four female telepaths, usually who have been close since birth, and they can transmit information vast distances. On the rare occasion that the Emperor leaves Centauri Prime, two go with him, and two stay behind at the Royal court. This is another tradition that Emperor Cartagia seems to have done away with, though whether Londo Mollari will revive it remains to be seen. Most female Centauri's telepathic powers are of a more prophetic nature.
