Comstar
Comstar is the organisation that is charged with maintaining and operating the Hyperpulse Generator stations, the technology that is capable of almost instant communication throughout the
Inner Sphere. Without Comstar service, the realms of the Inner Sphere would be cut off from the rest of the galaxy.
Originally founded by Jerome Blake, the Minister of Communications during the final days of the
Star League, Comstars original edict was to keep the valuable HPG stations neutral, to preserve the technology and prevent them from falling into the hands of one of the Successor States. This move, which in a time when entire worlds were being blasted back to the stone age was a wise move.
In 2788, shortly after the fall of the Star League and the Exodus of
General Kerensky's forces, Blake seized Terra, declaring it a neutral world. Comstar kept it's neutrality and for the most part dealt with everyone fairly and equally. The original organisation, while still under Jerome Blake's leadership took on quasi religious trappings, with himself in the position of Primus. Blake was determined that technological control should remain largely the province of Comstar and forbade anyone in the organisation from discussing it with those outside the organisation. In this goal, Blake did seem almost visionary, as the Succession wars started and much of the technology of the Star League was lost in the fighting to come.
Comstar also set up the Mercenary Review Board, working as an arbitration, Comstar would act as a go-between for Mercenary units and potential employers. It would also let it be known what units could not be trusted. This control over Mercenary contracts continued for centuries until after the Battle of Tukayyid, when many of the Great Houses feel that Comstar could no longer be trusted to remain neutral. They retain a seat on the newer Mercenary Review and Bonding Commission.
Comstar seemed to get involved more in politics just prior to the Fourth Succession War when they tried to interfere in various actions. For example, the Gray Death Legion unearthed a Star League vintage Memory Core and Comstar tried to make sure no one else would have access to it.
During the wars themselves, Myndo Waterley, Precentor Dieron constantly tried to get
House Davion placed under an interdiction order. During the
Clan Wars, Comstar initially co-operated with the Clan occupations and only changed sides when they found out the Clan's ultimate target was Terra.
Anastius Focht assasinated Myndo Waterley, who by that time was Primus and was quite mad. He instituted sweeping reforms in the organisation saying that there should be a new openess in the order and that many of the religious trappings should be dropped.
Some of the order disagreed and formed the breakaway Word of Blake sect.
