Corsair (Starcraft)
Corsairs are small Protoss fighter craft employed by the Dark Templar. They are moderately durable, and when upgraded they are very fast. They are interceptors, lacking any anti-ground weaponry whatsoever but being effective against air units.
On a one-to-one basis, Corsairs are not especially powerful. Their Neutron Flare weapon does very little damage, although it has a fairly high rate of fire. However, in groups, Corsairs can scythe through hordes of enemies, as their attacks have a wide area of effect. Thus each enemy in a hostile squadron or swarm takes damage from each Corsair, allowing the Corsairs to rack up massive damage very quickly against their targets. They are less effective against capital ship fleets and are best paired with Scouts for such engagements.
While they can only attack air units, Corsair's offensive capabilities do extent to ground combat. Corsairs carry a technology known as the 'Disruption Web,' which produces a modest zone of psionic energies which interfere with sensors and sensory organs. Any being or vehicle within this zone (including friendly units) is incapable of targeting anything, and becomes little more than a target itself while it remains in the area of effect. Defensive structures are also vulnerable, and a flight of Corsairs can swiftly, albeit temporarily, neutralize most of a base's defensives prior to an assault.
Corsair pilots are notorious for being over-zealous and prone to leaving their posts to pursue enemies upon sight. This overt aggression can easily cost them their lives if they blunder into a well-defended enemy encampment.
