Covenant

A polytheistic, hegemonic conglomeration which began as an alliance (or 'Covenant') between the Prophets and the Elites (two alien species) after waging war on each other. The alliance between the Elites and Prophets was largely due to the reverence placed on their Gods, the Forerunners, and their lost technological artifacts.

With the Elites and Prophets in cooperation, there began a time of expansion for the Covenant, in which the recruitment of other races began. This recruitment was most often forced upon a race after defeat by the Covenant left them no other option, as in the case of the Grunts and Hunters. Other times, it was a simple matter of recruitment, such as the Engineers trance-like reverence of Forerunner technology. However, when the Human race first came into contact with the Covenant, the Covenant had only one thing to say: 'Your destruction is the will of the Gods...and we are their instrument.'

And so began the war between the Humans and the Covenant.

It was during this war with the Humans that the Covenant finally came into contact with one (out of seven) of the Forerunner Fortress Worlds, Halo 04. This is what was needed for the Covenant to begin what was termed 'The Great Journey'. The Prophets believed that, by setting off the Halo installations, they would be brought to the 'Divine Beyond'. What the Covenant didn't recognize was that the Halo installations were actually built by the Forerunners to study and contain the Flood, a parasitic lifeform whose very nature of rapid, seemingly unstoppable infectious capabilities makes them a danger to the entire galaxy. Also unknown to the Covenant was that the Halo installations were designed by the Forerunners as weapons, in the event of a Flood outbreak, capable of extinguishing all life in the galaxy and thereby containing the spread of the Flood through starvation.

The Covenant has (as of this writing) recently been on the threshold of an all-out civil war and appears to have split into factions. Currently the they are divided into a loyalist faction (consisting of Prophets, Brutes, Jackals, and Drones) and a seperatist faction (consisting of Elites, Grunts, and Hunters). The scale of the Covenant Civil War is unknown, although the death of the Covenant's top three Prophets and the rank of Arbiter being bestowed upon an Elite (an event that only takes place during the most tumultous of times in Covenant history) tends to suggest that the Covenant is on the brink of some very large changes indeed.
