USS Cygnus
A 1 kilometre long Deep Space Exploration vessel, the USS Cygnus left Earth amidst a great publicity campaign. Its commander, Dr. Hans Reinhardt, had pushed for the vessel to be constructed and it was labeled as the 'costliest fiasco in history'. The crew complement was 150, and the ship's role was to find intelligent life in outer space. In this role, it failed.
The vessel was recalled but never arrived back at Earth. Twenty years later it was found by the USS Palomino, a far smaller vessel with a similar role. The Palomino had stumbled across a black hole in its course and was just adjusting when the Cygnus was found floating perfectly still near the edge of the event horizon.
The ship itself is very complex; some describe it as a cross between a cathedral and a Victorian railway station. The most recognizable features are the large rear-mounted engines, and the tall distinctive tower which housed the impressive control room, and which also gave a commanding view over the ship and the surrounding area. The dome at the front housed the docking area for smaller vessels. The ship was totally self-sufficient with its own massive power houses and hydroponics gardens.
