3rd Technician Dave Lister

Dave Lister until recently was the last human living. Never what you could call an enthusiastic worker, his reasons for joining the Space Corps are unknown, though one source (the novels) say that he was stranded on one of the moons of Jupiter after mysteriously waking up in a spaceport terminal the night after a major drinking binge which might not sound so unusual, except that the binge took place in London. Lister wake up wearing fishing waders and holding a passport in the name of Emily Berkenstein.

Lister has no respect for authority whatsoever and has a generally cheerful disposition and optimistic outlook in life. He has few real ambitions beyond being married to Kristine Kochanski and starting a farm on Fiji (which is partially underwater due to global warming).

Lister reached the position of last human alive by committing the offence of breaking ships quarantine and bringing in a cat. For this he was sentenced to 18 months cryo freeze in one of Red Dwarfs few remaining stasis chambers. This might have been a deliberate act so that Lister could basically end up back at Earth without having to work for it.

While in stasis the Red Dwarf's reactor suffered a leak and the resulting radiation killed the entire crew. Holly the onboard AI sealed the stasis chamber until the radiation count was safe to enter.

Three million years later.......Dave Lister is woken by Holly and isn't too pleased to find out he may be the last human left alive as 'three million years is pretty good for a species'. Lister is to be kept sane by the hologram of his dead bunkmate, 2nd Technician Arnold Rimmer who he couldn't stand.

Lister has habits that would turn your stomach like chewing your toenails, and he will eat anything as long as it has curry sauce in it.

Recently, nanobots have remade the entire Red Dwarf, though it is different in many ways to the Red Dwarf that Lister knew, because that Red Dwarf was scaled down from it's original specifications as a cost cutting exercise. In addition to the ship, there was also a full crew complement.
