USS Defiant (DS9)

Overview

The Defiant was the first of its class, designed to fight the Borg. With the growing threat from the Gamma Quadrant, it was assigned to Deep Space Nine to help protect the wormhole and Bajor. In the series, the ship joined at the beginning of the third season in the episode 'The Search, Part 1'.

Cloaking Device

Unique amongst Federation starships, the Defiant was equipped with a cloaking device on loan from the Romulans. Initially, a Romulan was attached to the Defiant to operate and oversee use of the cloak. The deal with the Federation included the provision that the cloak could only be operated in the Gamma Quadrant.

The supervision from the Romulans was discontinued in the third season, although they apparently allowed the cloak to remain on Defiant.
