Doctor Who (TV series)
Doctor Who is the longest running TV science fiction series of all time. At the time of writing it has been renewed after a sixteen-year absence.
The show has seen 10 different actors play the Doctor (there are total of eleven 'official' different versions of the Doctor, the TV movie accounting for number discrepency).
The series follows the adventures of a Time Lord and his time machine, the TARDIS. He meets various companions along the way who stay with him for years at a time. Combined the The Doctor's ability to regenerate into different forms every few years, the series has been able to keep the character of the Doctor and the premise of the series unchanged for decades, without having to rely on a specific set of actors. That said, each actor brings a different personality to the Doctor, bringing some memorable interpretations over the years.
The time travel side of the series is used for the most part to deliver characters to settings and situations, rather than as a solution or advantage. This has been explained in the past by the TARDIS being old and imprecise. So, for example, it can't be used to go back a few days and fix a problem, or travel a few miles to get somewhere quickly. That said, the TARDIS is used to travel across London with little fuss in the first episode of the new series, 'Rose' or chase a taxi cab in 'The Runaway Bride'.
The Doctor encounters many hostile alien lifeforms, who's role is similair to Star Trek's Alien of the Week. However, the Doctor has several regular appearing arch-enemies, like the Daleks, the Cybermen and the renegade Time Lord known as the Master. Both the Daleks and the Cybermen have re-appeared in the new 2005 series in which especially the Cybermen underwent a modern restyling and a moderate alteration of methods and goals.
