Doctor Who (Universe)

Doctor Who is a long-running BBC TV series about a mysterious timelord called simply The Doctor. He travels in time with the aid of a companion, sometimes two or three.Over the years, the Doctor has been played by eleven actors on TV and in film (nine of which are considered 'official'). This is explained by the Doctor's ability to regenerate every so often, an ability he shares with all time lords from Gallifrey. At the time of writing, a new series of Doctor Who is being filmed, after a gap of over a decade. Christopher Ecclestone and Billie Piper are the new Doctor and new companion respectively.Quintessentially British, Doctor Who has a huge cult following that has not wavered in the time the series has been off-air. Often supposedly pitched towards younger viewers, the series has been through so many changes behind the scenes (an understandable side-effect of such a long-running show) that it cannot be classified as being for any particular age group. The stories often have very serious themes running through them, which is in stark contrast to the occasional campery and poor production design that has occasionally robbed the show of it's credibility.
