Escort carrier

The escort carrier line was a stopgap design to refill the Confederations carrier forces after heavy losses. A dozen of them could be built for the price of one fleet carrier.

It was a makeshift design that had serious flaws and had only limited space to accomodate only three squadrons of fighters, and it also had a very limited launching capability due to it's narrow runway. This lack of space also prevented heavier bomber designs like the Broadsword from being carried, so it's strike forces were limited to using smaller fighter bombers like the Sabre.

Those ships were often used as throw-away assets in missions that almost guaranteed to get the ship killed, such as Strike Force Valkyries' mission to attack the Kilrathi homeworld.

However, even if many ships got lost in action, it proved to be very useful, leading to the production of more of the same type.
