Excelsior

Overview

The Excelsior class has enjoyed remarkable longevity in the Federation, from it's first appearance in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock to it's final appearance in Star Trek: Voyager's 'Endgame'. It is likely that the ship continued to be used after 'Endgame', but with the end of Voyager, this cannot be known. However, this alone represents 88 years of service.

Historical Significance

The first ship of the class, the Excelsior, was the testbed for transwarp drive, a technology that was apparently unsuccessful, since it is not referenced any further beyond it's initial appearance.
