Extra-Terrestrial Combat Unit (X-Com)
Assembled by the United Nations at 1999 to research and combat the alien threat, X-Com is the result of international cooperation on an entirely new scale. The X-Com project is funded monthly by 16 different nations, which are (ordered from most paying to least paying): United States of America, Japan, France, South Africa, Germany, China, Brazil, Russia, Australia, United Kingdoms, Nigeria, Egypt, India, Italy, Spain, Canada.
X-Com enjoys access to the best soldiers, weapons, technologies, scientists, laboratories and engineers in the world. The organization is spread through several underground bases (that were constructed after the sucess of the initial, first X-Com base early in its history), from which it operates to shut down and assault alien UFO's, and launch counterattacks against alien forces threatening the well-being of the Earth's nations.
After the victory of the
1st alien War, X-Com's funding was cut, and it was eventually almost entirely shut down. It was re-opened to battle in the
2nd Alien War, again, with international funding. Finally, after winning the 2nd War, X-Com adopted a corporation-like structure, selling technology and highly skilled mercenaries to the highest bidder. Thus, it no longer needed external funding to sustain itself, but eventually had competition on the security and weapons market from groups such as Megapol and MarSec.
