Frank Herbert's Dune

Dune had long been thought suitable for adapting to the film format, but the 1980's David Lynch version left many Dune fans disappointed and those not familiar with the book confused.
In 2000, a three part mini series by the Sci-Fi Channel was commisioned, and while some of the production values were lower, for instance the heavy use of background paintings, the mini-series, for the most part stays closer to the book. Extensive use was made of acting talent from Eastern Europe, thereby cutting down costs, but also bringing in some potential new faces.

The mini series met with a generally favourable response, so much so, that a sequel, Children of Dune, covering the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune was planned.

The basic story stays much the same as the Lynch version. House Atreides are commanded by the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV to move to the desert planet, Arrakis and harvest the Spice Melange. This is the only planet in the entire universe that yields this precious material. The Harkonnens, the enemy of the Atreides are seen to be disgraced as they held the commision to mine Arrakis. The whole plan is a trap by the Emperor and House Harkonnen as House Atreides is seen as too popular in the Landsraad, and thereby a challenge to the Emperors power.
