Futurama

Warning: parse_ini_file(/var/www/sfdb.org.uk/entry_templates): failed to open stream: Success in /var/www/sfdb.org.uk/viewer.php on line 336 Created by the same team as The Simpsons, Futurama is set in the year 3000. The main character is Fry, who was accidentally cryogenically frozen in the year 1999, and emerges 1000 years later. He encounters a world vastly different from that he is familiar with.

The humour in Futurama is sometimes regarded as being more subtle than that of The Simpsons, and contains many cult TV, film, and book references as well as parodies of, and tributes to, modern society.

However, the show did not enjoy the success of the Simpsons and was cancelled by Fox after four seasons. Since then, there have been efforts to get the show ressurected, and although this has not yet come to pass, there has been a direct-to-DVD movie, with plans to show segments of this film in sequence on Comedy Central. There remain hopes, however, that with the combination of good DVD sales, sales of the movie, and (notably) the successful de-cancellation of Family Guy - another animated show cancelled prematurely - a rebirth is still possible.
