Galaxy

Overview

The Galaxy class starship was the premier Starfleet vessel through the mid-24th century. A multimission craft, the Galaxy class were few in number and were deployed either on important specific missions or on very long lasting expeditions of deep space exploration.

During the course of the Dominion War, the Galaxy class starship was refitted for a more combat-oriented role rather then it's previous role as explorer. With additional weaponry and enhanced shielding, it performed extremely well in the later parts of the war.

The craft is designed with internal space for any kind of standard mission, including research, diplomatic and military.

Abilities

The Galaxy class is fairly unique among starfleet vessels in that it carries whole families. This is an extension to Gene Roddenberry's original idea that a starfleet vessel should have all the 'comforts of home'. It also feeds into the ability of the ship to seperate itself into two parts. The saucer can be safely jettisoned, carrying all the crew's quarters and families to safety (albeit at impulse speeds) while the warp drive-equipped 'stardrive' section can enter combat. This ability was used three times in the series: 'Encounter at Farpoint', 'The Arsenal of Freedom' and 'The Best of Both Worlds, Part II'. The ability was seen for the final time for the Enterprise in Star Trek: Generations.

Armamants

The Galaxy class features two photon torpedo armaments, with a third revealed on the docking surface of the saucer when in seperated mode (according to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual). Phaser 'strips' are seeded throughout the hull surface.
