Colonel George Taylor

Colonel George Taylor was the commander of the Icarus mission to find life in deep space. This was brought abruptly to a halt when the vessel crash landed into a lake on an unknown planet and the surviving crew members had to evacuate.

Taylor was a cynic, he was not on the mission out of any high minded ideas of patriotism or scientific interest. He was pretty disgusted with the state of human civilisation and the looming threat of global nuclear war. He knew when the mission started that when he returned, everyone he knew would be long dead but he didn't care.

Taylor and his two crewmates Landon and Dodge trekked across the desert of the unknown planet they were on for many days until they found a fresh spring lake. Shortly afterwards he was captured by sentient bipedal apes and hauled to their city. He had also seen other humans but they appeared to be mute. Taylor suffering from a throat wound was separated from his crewmates and locked up in a cell. There he was examined by Zira, a Chimpanzee scientist who thought he showed more intelligence than the others.

Taylor later regained the power of speech and was shocked to discover that he was put on trial, along with Dr Zira and her husband Cornelius for heresy. The charges were that Zira had tampered with a 'normal' mute human with some crude form of genetic engineering in defiance of the Sacred Scrolls which formed the basis of Ape Religion and Culture.

He was due to be executed, but his escape was assisted by Zira, Cornelius and others. He escaped across the desert, called by the Apes, the Forbidden Zone and went to the site of an archealogical dig that Cornelius had been at the previous year. With Dr Zaius and gorilla forces in pursuit he was eventually cornered but did capure Zaius, obtaining the proof that man had been the original dominant species. To his astonishment, this did not shock Zaius. Zaius knew that humans had been the original dominant lifeform on the planet and that they had made the planet a wasteland for centuries.

Taylor escaped along the coast and was confronted with the truth that he was back on Earth, an Earth near destroyed by a nuclear war. He later was killed on an underground fortress inhabitated by mutants. His last action was to press the launch button of a nuclear weapon after hearing the vehemence of Dr Zaius still decrying man's barbarism.
