Commissioner Gerald Simmonds

Gerald Simmonds was John Koenigs direct superior in the Space Commission. Just prior to Breakaway, he was the overseer of Moonbase Alpha, and primarily the task to get the Meta Probe launched.

Considering the time period between the failed 1996 Ultraprobe mission and the breakaway of the moon from Earth's orbit, it is probable that Simmonds replaced the unfortunate Commissioner Dixon after that mission had a humiliating failure.

A comsumate politician, Simmonds was not averse to using other people for his own ends. He conspired with Commander Anton Gorski, Koenigs predecessor, to cover up the deaths of workers at the Nuclear Disposal Areas, in case it reflected badly on himself and jeopardised the launch of the probe. When the probe crew crashed while on a training flight, he stated that they had a viral infection.

Putting Koenig in charge of Alpha, Simmonds knew that by this time there was little chance of a Probe launch going to plan, and Koenig would serve as a sacrificial lamb.

Simmonds was stranded on Alpha when Nuclear Disposal Area 2 blew up, catapulting the moon out of orbit. Despite the main computers summary that there was only a marginal chance of succesfully returning to Earth, Simmonds constantly agitated, getting in Koenigs hair.

Simmonds doomed himself when he seized control of a Kaldorian ship that was on a journey to Earth and one cryogenic chamber was free. Unfortunately for him, the chambers atmosphere was not properly calibrated for his physiology, and he was revived early. This doomed him to a slow agonising death.
