Halo

The popular video games are actually only a part of the Halo franchise. At the time of writing, four novels also exist ('The Fall of Reach', 'The Flood', 'First Strike', and 'Ghosts of Onyx').

The universe is part of game studio Bungie's overall timeline, which includes their Marathon series of games.

The Halo series revolves around Spartan 117, a genetically engineered soldier. He is often referred to by his rank in the United Nations Space Command, Master Chief. He is the commanding officer of the Spartans, a group of gentically engineered supersoldiers that serve the UNSC as shock-troops in their fight against pirates, splinter human factions, and an alien threat more deadly than any threat seen to mankind.

The Halo itself is a fortress world built by the forerunners, its purpose unknown until further into the first game, 'Halo: Combat Evolved.'
