Hyperion

A series of four books (and a less widely known novella) by writer Dan Simmons. It includes Hyperion, Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and Rise of Endymion.

The first two books describe the events and history surrounding the pilgrimage of 7 people to a grouping of myseterious alien constructs (called the Time Tombs) on the planet Hyperion, which is also the site where a mysterious, deadly creature with incredible powers resides - all while a horde of Ouster mutants converges around the planet, ready to conquer it and use the Time Tombs to their own ends.

The third and fourth books are set three centuries after the first two, and describe the efforts of Raul Endymion, an ordinary man native to Hyperion, to escort, assist and protect the mysterious girl Aenea in her quest to defeat the evil Artificial Intelligences of the TechnoCore (as well as their puppets, the Pax, an interstellar Catholic empire), who plot to exploit and destroy man kind.
