Invader Zim

Invader Zim is a sci-fi cartoon which is widely regarded as a cult classic, thanks to its bizzare and over-the-top sense of humor.

The premise of the show is that Zim, a none-too-bright soldier in a huge interstellar empire, is misdirected by his leaders to try to take over Earth, an unimportant backwater planet where Zim won't be able to interfere with the bigger campaign at hand. As an Irken Invader, Zim is expected to gather intelligence on his assigned planet, and even conquer it by himself if possible.

Since Zim is is not a terribly intelligent or skilled Irken, his grandiose plans for domination are perpetually thwarted by mundane Earth realities, including a human arch-rival . . . from the local grade school.

Invader Zim was cancelled after just one season on Nickelodeon, most likely a victim of of its own rather dark and less children-oriented themes. Nevertheless, its older fans continue to keep the cult alive.
