Judge Dredd

The Universe of Judge Dredd first appeared in the weekly British comic 2000AD in 1977.

Judge Dredd is a member of the Judges, a quasi-futuristic police force who enforce the law in Mega-City One. During the early times of the existence of Dredd, Mega City One covers almost the entire Eastern Seaboard from parts of what used to be Canada right down to Florida. Mega City Two is much the same size but spans the Western Seaboard, and Mega City Three later known as Texas City occupies the state of Texas. In between these outposts of civilisation is the Cursed Earth, the wasteland created by use of chemical, nuclear and biological weapons.

The Judges themselves are in some cases genetically engineered, Dredd being a clone of the first Chief Judge, Fargo. The Judges have absolute unwavering authority throughout the city. Unemployment in Mega City One is over 85% due to almost complete automation leading to a drastic rise in crime. Sentencing for crimes is invariably harsh by todays standards.

Over the years, Judge Dredd has remained as the main character in 2000AD, though there have been spin off characters who have been almost as popular, like the Dark Judges and Judge Anderson.

A film was also made after many years anticipation but it received a mixed reception from die-hard fans of the comic book character. The script was allegedly cut to pieces from the original.
