K-wing

The K-wing is an advanced descendant of the Y-wing, and a vital heavy assault fighter for the New Republic.

The K-wing is a large fighter, vaguely resembling a cross between a Y-wing and a B-wing. The craft are extremely well-armed, with no fewer than 18 hardpoints which can accept concussion missiles, proton torpedoes, hypervelocity missiles, thermal detonator warheads, and flechette missiles. This is an extreme amount and variety of heavy ordnance, even compared to the B-wing, indeed even compared to larger assault craft such as Skipray Blastboats.

Of course, such weapons can be depleted quite quickly in combat. To provide more lasting firepower, the K-wing has a neck-mounted medium-range double laser cannon, which is useful against lighter fighters, and a chin-mounted light quad turbolaser assembly, which provides high firepower at short range. A dedicated gunner is required to handle so many offensive systems.

The K-wing has no hyperdrive, so it relies on heavy fleet carriers for transport, which also serve to re-stock its ordnance. If a K-wing can't escape from an attack, its forward command module is capable of detaching and becoming an escape pod (although it is left quite vulnerable).

The K-wing has proven its worth as an assault fighter, being deployed in many conflicts for missions ranging from destroying armored vehicle formations to engaging capital ships.
