Lancer frigate

The Lancer frigate is a fairly small (250 meter) warship originally used by the Galactic Empire. The ship was, in fact, an overreaction on the part of the Imperial Navy to the destruction of the first Death Star; the Imperials feared that Rebel fighters, having already destroyed a massively fortified superweapon, might also pose a serious risk to other Imperial ships. The Lancer was thus born as an anti-fighter vessel.

The ship mounts twenty quad laser cannons designed to target and track fast-moving fighters. While these weapons allow the ship to excel at decimating enemy fighter sqadrons, the Lancer lacks any weaponry for ship-to-ship combat - making it easy pickings for other capital combat vessels. This problem is compounded by the Lancer's relatively weak shields, low sublight speed, and the lack of any on-board fighters (it merely carries a pair of shuttles).

However, the Lancer was effective when used in tandem with more powerful vessels, such as Star Destroyers. Heavy combat ships have traditionally been geared toward anti-ship duty and as such tend to lack effective anti-fighter defenses; the Lancer provides that defense, while being protected from other capital ships by the warship it escorts. Lancers are also useful for escorting convoys against fighter raids.
