Duke Leto Atreides

Head of House Atreides during the time of the Arrakis affair, Duke Leto Atreides is a popular leader both among the other great houses of the Landsraad and his own household. Whereas some Great Houses, like the Harkonnens rule through fear, the Atreides prefer to rule through justice and a sense of respect.

Duke Leto is officially unmarried, Lady Jessica is his concubine, leaving the way open for a marriage to a Lady of another great house that could help form an alliance. He fathers two children, Paul Atreides who later becomes Paul Muad'dib among the Fremen and Alia, of whom he is unaware at the time of his death.

The Dukes downfall is brought about by a complicated machievellian plan. The Spacing Guild fear that the Duke can engineer an alliance that could endanger their supply of the Spice Melange, the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV fears that the Dukes popularity rivals his in the Landsraad. To this end, the Emperor seemingly retracts the Harkonnens contract to mine Arrakis and send the Atreides there, apparently disgracing the Harkonnens but in fact there is a traitor in the Atreides household who will deactivate the house shields and allow Harkonnen and disguised Sardauker in to attack the Atreides removing a rival.
