Metroid

The Metroid series is one of Nintendo's signature game franchises.

Set several centuries in the future, the series follows the exploits of bounty hunter Samus Aran, a woman who was bestowed a sophisticated suit of power armor by a race of aliens known as the Chozo, who are currently extinct in their corporeal form.

Samus's primary foes are the Space Pirates, a species of alien dedicated to rising to power in the face of societies like the Galactic Federation, their main opposition. However, the Federation lacks the force necessary to truly wipe out the Pirates; Samus was originally hired as a bounty hunter by the Federation because of this fact.

The Space Pirates themselves are a rigidly disciplined, rigorously scientific, and highly motivated force; while they lack numbers, they excel at hiding and their research progams often produce impressive results. Unfortunately for them, Samus has a knack for infiltrating and destroying their facilities.

The game's namesake, Metroids, are strange (and possibly artificial) creatures which suck the life-force out of their victims. Most forms look like mutated jellyfish with tusks, although other variations exist. Highly resistant to energy weapons, they can only really be hurt through kinetic force or by freezing. Metroids are a favorite subject of research for the Space Pirates, who seek to harness their bizarre abilities.

The Metroid series is comprised of eight games, with a ninth planned at the time of writing. A movie based on the franchise is also being planned.
