Metroid (Creature)

Metroids are bizarre alien lifeforms. While a number of variations exist, the standard form resembles a jellyfish with tusks and reddish internal organs, which are visible through the translucent outer tissues.

Metroids are of much interest - and concern - because of their ability to drain the 'life force' from their victims. This 'life energy' is mysterious; the Space Pirates, who are rigorously scientific and not at all technologically backwards, were unable to establish the nature of this energy. Metroids cannot exert this effect upon machines, so the energy cannot be any type of energy as conventionally understood.

This ability makes Metroids exceedingly dangerous, as they can swiftly kill a victim, even a victim in heavy armor, once they latch on with their 'tusks.' For this reason Metroids were (believed) hunted into extinction by forces of the Galactic Federation. This ability also made Metroids a subject of intense interest to the Space Pirates, who were ever eager for any technology that could give them the edge against the Galactic Federation and their hated nemesis, Samus Aran.

Metroids have other unusual properties. They hover with considerable speed and agility, despite having no wings or other mechanism to produce such an effect. They are highly resistant to energy weapons, only being truly vulnerable to weapons that produce intense cold or powerful concussion effects. And they appear capable of converting energy into matter, if their feeding style and the astounding growth of the Metroid that attacked Mother Brain are any indication.

A number of Metroid variants are known to have extisted, including many which resulted from Phazon exposure on Tallon IV. Most of these retained the basic Metroid shape, but others were radically different, some sporting tentacles and having more elongate forms. Some were even capable of draining energy at a distance, without the need to latch directly onto a prey item.

On their homeworld of SR388, Metroids fed on a form of nervous-system parasite ('X parasites') and thereby held their numbers in check.
