Captain Michael Jankowski

Captain Michael Jankowski was commanding officer of the EAS Prometheus, a Hyperion class Heavy Cruiser. Despite a record of being foolhardy and trigger happy, Captain Jankowski was selected by Earthforce command to head up a task force to try and initiate first contact with the Minbari.

Despite warnings from Londo Mollari, then liason to Earth, and then Lieutenant Commander John Sheridan's refusal to work with a CO with such a reputation, Jankowski was dispatched with three capital ships and some support craft.

The EAS Prometheus sighted the Minbari Cruiser Valen'tha and her escorts, and despite the advice of Jankowski's XO, he wanted in for a closer look to get more information. His sole stated reason was that 'they'll be handing out medals by the bucketload'.

The powerful Minbari scanner systems interfered with the jump engines and the traditional Minbari greeting of gun ports open was misinterpreted as a sign of hostility. Jankowski panicked and ordered his gunners to open fire. The damage to the Minbari allowed the Earthforce ships a chance to retreat under withering fire from the Minbari fighters.

Jankowski quickly regaled Earthforce general staff with how he had beaten the 'alien menace', but at that moment ISN newscasts showed film of Earth Alliance stations and ships being attacked en masse.

Jankowski later committed suicide in guilt, unable to bear the consequences of his actions. He was found in his apartment with a tape running showing the after-contact celebrations interpersed with shots of the war. He had taken his life with his PPG.
