Moonbase Alpha
Moonbase Alpha is located in the Plato Crater near the Sea of Showers. It is contructed out of quarried rock and ores.
The Moonbase itself is 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in diameter and extends up to 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) in areas below the lunar surface. The operation of Moonbase is controlled from Main Mission Tower, located at the hub of the wheel-shaped base. In emergency situations, Moonbase can be operated from the Command Center, located directly beneath Main Mission on Alpha's lowest construction level. Originally, the base was designed to serve as both a deep space exploration station and a monitoring station for the nuclear waste areas on the Moon's farside.
Moonbase Alpha is designed to be fully self sufficient with power being generated through the use of nuclear reactors supplemented by the accumulation of solar energy.
Initially Moonbase Alpha is totally unarmed, but after Breakaway work is undertaken to convert some of the
Eagle Transporter craft and some basic weapons are mounted. Later on two large gun posts are constructed near the rim of the crater and can be quickly deployed if needed.
Alpha has five primary launch pads connected to the base. These are connected to large underground hangers where the Eagle craft are stored. In the hangers they can be repaired, reconfigured for different missions and moved into a launch position. Most of the time there is at least one Eagle on stand by, and more likely there is one held in position at each pad.
Unforms in Moonbase Alpha have a colour coded sleeve indicating which department the person belongs to.
They are as follows:
Black: Command
White: Medical
Flame: Main Mission
Yellow: Data
Orange: Reconnaissance
Rust: Technical
Purple: Security
Khaki: Visitor
Travel through the large base is by one of two means. If a short journey is required using the corridors will suffice. If it is longer, or to an isolated area, the base is equipped with Travel Tubes. This is like an Underground railroad in construction. Some travel tube tunnels run under the surface of the moon, others are above the surface. Each travel tube car is quite sizeable, able to accommodate about 16 people seating with more standing. Each car also has an emergency escape door at one end of the car. Floorspace in the car is sufficient to allow a stretcher team.
