Omega class Destroyer
The Omega class Destroyer is a combination of battleship and aircraft carrier. Massive firepower combined with several squadrons of fighters make it one of the most impressive ships of the younger races and the most powerful in the
Earth Alliance, other then the Warlock class Destroyer.
The Omega class measures around 1.7km in length and has an impressive array of weaponry to the front and rear; its broadside firepower lacks strength, however.
The Omega class was constructed after the Earth-Minbari war ended and the
Earth Alliance found that its
Hyperion cruisers and
Nova dreadnoughts were horribly poor at holding off the
Minbari advance; the Omega class was to be a full replacement for the
Hyperions. Beginning with the EAS Achilles (OCG-1) they began mass producing them in 2248.
The most distinctive feature of the Omega is its central rotating section, which spins in a clockwise direction at a steady speed of 10m/s2 a second, allowing the crew to enjoy simulated gravity and not have to strap themselves into their seats.
In 2261, President Clark tried to modify the Omega design to give him an elite force capable of stopping Sheridan from taking back Earth. He grafted advanced shadow bio-armor to the hulls of several Omegas and improved their weapon systems. Commander Ivanova led a fleet of
White Stars to them and succeeded in destroying all of the Omega-X class destroyers.
The Omega serves the
Earth Alliance extremely well, but is gradually being replaced by the more advanced Warlocks.
Omega class ships were named for figures in Greek mythology. Under the reign of President Clarke they were named for famous figures, but after his defeat they have gone back to the old way of naming the vessels.
