Orion's Arm

Orion's Arm is a sci-fi universe which is written, online, by public contributors. Rather than expanding through the work of a single author, Orion's Arm grows as multiple contributors add stories and background context to the universe.

As science fiction, Orion's Arm is heavily focused on the theme of transhumanism, the alteration and/or replacement of human beings by the technology which they have created. Actual, ordinary human beings in Orion's Arm are rare and insignificant compared to the range of genetically, cybernetically, and nanotechnologically modified entities which dominate the Orion Arm of the Milky Way. Most powerful of all are hyper-advanced artificial intelligences with demigod-like powers.

The collaborators who contribute to Orion's Arm claim that their universe is dedicated to being 'hard' sci-fi - that is, that Orion's Arm is purportedly more realistic because it sticks to known laws of physics (whereas much sci-fi is 'soft' because it takes liberties with technical accuracy). However, this is often called into question, as a number of aspects of Orion's Arm technology - especially its nanotechnology - are perhaps not really so realistic as its authors claim. Regardless, some aspects are indeed more in line with known or theoretical physics than are most sci-fi universes.
