Universe: Known Space
Pak
The Pak hail from a planet close to the galactic core. They are charactarised by the three stages of their lifecycle: child, breeder, protector. After a breeder reaches a certain age, it feels an urge to eat a certain kind of root plant known as 'tree of life'. After it has eaten, a viral lifeform that resides in the plant causes the mutation of the breeder into a Protector.
The breeder becomes stronger, tougher, faster and smarter. He also loses his sexual organs and capacity to reproduce. While a breeder is barely intelligent, capable of flinging rocks at most, a Protector has tremendous intelligence which can be used to make stunningly rapid technological advancements. A Protector is incredibly strong, and in some cases can move faster than the eye can follow.
The Protectors, as their name implies, exist to protect the breeders of their family line. Every protector wants its own line to dominate, since that will ensure its survival. This causes great wars between protectors, that often involve the liberal use of mass destruction weapons. Some Pak groups have attempted to 'Pak-form' and colonize nearby planets, but those planets were quickly rendered uninhabitable by rival protectors, in order to prevent them from becoming a major threat in the future.
A group of protectors once attempted to find a planet far enough from the homeworld to colonize, in the hopes that rival protector groups would be unable or unwilling to find it if the distance is large enough. To that purpose, that group has travelled 20,000 light-years from their home, eventually settling on planet Earth approximately 3 million years ago.
The colony failed. The tree-of-life root didn't grow right, and breeders (who will later be known as Homo Habillis by their descendants) were unable to become protectors. Eventually, the remaining protectors died off, leaving the breeders to live and mutate naturally for the next millenia, eventually 'mutating' into sentience and becoming what we now call the Human race.
Since then, another group of pak has attempted to colonize a planet in similar fashion. They chose a spot 200 light years from Earth, and constructed a great structure that we call the Ringworld.
