Patterning

Patterning is the technology and process of transferring ones consciousness and personality into a machine body, essentially turning the person immortal, but forces him to sacrifice a part of itself (his former body) in the process.

The Core, the de facto galactic government, has made the process of patterning mandatory for all the citizens, in order to preserve their lives as well as allow them to live more safely. However, a large group of people was not content with the decision of the government. They escaped to a remote corner of the galaxy, established themselves on the planet Empyrrean, and later become known as the Arm.

The moral issues revolving around patterning were in fact the driving force behind the horrible war between the Core and the Arm, which lasted no less than 4000 years.
