Planet of the Apes

The original Planet of the Apes was a novel written by Pierre Boulle who also gained fame for writing the novel of Bridge Over the River Kwai.

The film was made in 1968, starring popular actor Charlton Heston and was substantially different from Boulle's novel. Despite this, the film soon gained massive cult status with its various relevant messages of the time against slavery, nuclear war and others.

There were four sequel films which varied in quality widely, as well as a spin off live action TV series. This lasted one season and was followed by an animated series.

Planet of the Apes retained it's popularity over the years and was remade in 2001 by Tim Burton. This film although decent enough met a mixed reception among purist fans of the original which was ironic as the rather strange ending which confounded so many viewers was very close to that of the novel.
