Primary Beam

When Helmuth's base was destroyed from the inside by duodec charges, the Galactic Patrol moved to take out the orbital fortresses surrounding what was left of it. However the Boskonians, knowing they were dead either way, instead overloaded their Macrobeam projectors: the radiation killed the gun team and ruined the projector, but every single shot took out one of the most heavily armoured ships the Patrol had.
Fortunately, the Boskonians never got word out about this, and after eventually wearing them down, Grand Fleet improved upon the technology: special disposable projectors were designed and the entire weapon shielded against the radiation. When first deployed against the Boskonians they proved a tremendously powerful weapon - although as ever it was not long before the Boskonians acquired knowledge of it and began using it in their own fleets as well.
