Ranger Class Light Carrier

The Ranger class Light Carriers were obsolete before the Kilrathi war even began, built to a totally conventional design, they were designed as support ships to larger capital ships. Their air wings were of an average size when first designed, but as fighters got larger, and more ordnance storage was needed, the size of air wing that a Ranger could sustain grew smaller.

Most of the class were either mothballed or relegated to training duties until the false truce when many of Confed's finest ships were either destroyed or damaged so badly that other ships were needed to plug the gap. Even the ad hoc Escort Carriers were almost as suitable as fleet carriers than the Rangers.

Ranger's were hastily pressed back into service as front line carriers, and some were even intended to be redisgnated as CV's rather than CVL's. This shows the desperate conditions throughout Confed in the latter years of the war.

It's ironic though, that an ancient Ranger Class, the TCS Victory was so involved with the final destruction of Kilrah and bringing an end to the war.

A visit to a Ranger class will show that no matter how disciplined the crew, the carrier itself will appear to be in a sloppy and rather decrepit condition. In fact, it's testament to the skill of the Confed crews that these ancient ships managed to stay in spaceworthy condition.
