Reavers

The Reavers are a group of ravenous, cannibalistic and fericious marauders who prey on small colonies and undefended or lightly armed ships. While their existence is denied by the Alliance, the outer colonies and ships who travel between them are well aware of the Reavers.

What follows constitutes a major spoiler for the film Serenity.

The Reavers were created by a special project of the Alliance to induce non-violent behaviour, obdience and harmony through a psychotropic chemical agent called 'PAX'. The experiment had taken place on the planet of Miranda, with more than 30 million colonists. The agent worked, but too well. The result was that 99.9% of the population became so lethargic that they stopped working, breeding, talking, and eventually, eating and breathing. They lay down wherever they stood and allowed themselves to die. The remaining 0.1% of the planet's 30 million people had the opposite reaction to the Pax.

Their 'aggressor response' increased beyond madness, and they became mindlessly violent and aggressive without limit. Approximately 30,000 Reavers were created. They killed all the Alliance officials who remained on Miranda, broke into the laboratories where the scientists had locked themselves in, tortured them and ate them alive.

Than they took the colony and goverment ships in orbit around Miranda and began their reign of terror among the outlying colonies.
