Red Dwarf (TV Series)

The series follows the adventures of Dave Lister, the last human being thought left alive, Arnold Rimmer a hologram, Cat, a humanoid evolution of a household cat, and Kryten the Service Mechanoid.

The initial two series were fairly low budget, portraying the Red Dwarf as a rather drab, grey ship. However, the initial idea behind Red Dwarf was not that it was to be a Science-Fiction show, it was intended that it be primarily a Comedy with a Sci-Fi setting. Later series seemed to switch the focus, making it more of a Sci-Fi show with comedy elements.

Rob Grant and Doug Naylor were the driving force behind the series but later seemed to go their seperate ways. Whether it was just a desire to pursue seperate projects or they had a falling out is not known, but series VII was the first to be produced under the new regime.

By this time, audience figures had fallen from their peak days and Series VII has been widely derided by many Red Dwarf fans, yet there remains some good storylines. The return of the character of Kochanski played by Chloe Annet rather than the original Claire Grogan seems to have been a mixed bag. Not just a change in actress but almost as if the character seemed different. Chris Barrie also departed the show about halfway through due to increasing workload from other sources mainly the continueing success of the Brittas Empire and his role in the Tomb Raider films, though he would return for Red Dwarf VIII.
