USS Reliant

The USS Reliant under the command of Captain Terrell was a Miranda class Starship assigned to the Genesis project, a civilian project that could make barren planets habitable. The Reliant was to find a suitable planet for test purposes that had absolutely no life.

The Reliant decided to probe Ceti Alpha VI, a desolate planet where it picked up life signs. When the Captain and Commander Chekov investigated they found out that the planet was Ceti Alpha V, inhabited by the marooned remnants of Khan Noonien Singh's genetic supermen.

With the Reliant captured, Khan lured the USS Enterprise into a trap and severely damaged her, though the Reliant itself did not escape damage. The Reliant was later destroyed in the Mutara Nebula by the Enterprise.

The Reliant herself was a smaller ship than the Constitution class Enterprise, and in a normal combat situation should not have been able to inflict as much damage as she did.
