SLAM

SLAM (meaning currently unknown, but is believed to not necessarily be an acronym but merely a slang term) is a super-high max security prison, typically comprising of an entire planet not normally habitable. They are used to detain the most wanted and dangerous criminals in the known universe. A sentence to a SLAM is always for life, and all are considered inescapable (although occasionally, a few such as Richard B. Riddick prove this to be false). In some SLAMs, such as the one on Butcher Bay, the prison guards can be as corrupt as the prisoners themselves, leading to an internal society based on the rule of the fittest over the meek. Many SLAMs are sub-divided into many levels; Butcher Bay has standard detainment cells for 'standard' offenders, slave mines for those who refuse to conform and cryo-sleep for the especially dangerous. The SLAM on Crematoria has at least a slave mine level. As they typically cover the entire planet, SLAMs may also have dedicated spaceport facilities.

The implication from the movie Chronicles of Riddick and the game Escape from Butcher Bay is that SLAMs are typically privately owned or at least privately operated.
