Sarah Kerrigan

Sarah Kerrigan began her life as a citizen of the Terran Confederacy. As she possessed strong but latent psychic powers, she was taken by the Confederacy at a young age and indoctrinated into their Ghost program. There she was the subject of experimentation and mental alteration, giving her greater control over her powers but also restricting her ability to use them against the will of her commanders.

Kerrigan was rescued from a Confederate facility by Arcturus Mengsk, leader of the radical guerilla faction known as the Sons of Korhal. Being both vehemently anti-Confederate and recognizing the potential of Kerrigan's abilities, Mengsk took her into his organization and eventually appointed her as his right-hand lieutenant. Under Mengsk, Kerrigan served as an infiltrator and assasin.

Kerrigan participated in the early stages of the three-way conflicts between the Zerg, Protoss, and Confederacy, fighting alongside Jim Raynor under the banner of the Sons of Korhal. Kerrigan was, like Mengsk, extremely bitter towards the Confederacy, but even she protested when Mengsk used Psi Emitters to draw vast Zerg hordes down upon first a Confederate army, and then the thriving planet Tarsonis. While she questioned his sanity regarding these atrocities, Kerrigan's loyalty to Mengsk was unwavering. This was perhaps her undoing.

The Protoss, in responding to the Zerg assault on Tarsonis, fought valiantly to protect the remaining urban centers and (presumably) enable more local Terrans to escape. Mengsk, wanting the destruction to be total in revenge for the Confederacy's annihilation of his homeworld of Korhal, ordered Kerrigan to lead forces against the Protoss, to distract and weaken them while the Zerg rampaged. She complied and destroyed a Protoss detachment before the Zerg bore down on her position.

Mensgk, his aims achieved and now concerned about the Zerg's next move, ordered his fleet to move out of orbit. Kerrigan requested evacuation but received no reply from Mengsk. Only Raynor openly questioned Mengsk; in fact, this incident led to his breaking from the SoK. Kerrigan was left for dead on Tarsonis.

However, her psionic potential intrigued the Zerg Overmind, which captured her and placed her in a 'Chrysalis' so as to mutate or 'infest' her into becoming a Zerg creature herself. When she emerged, she was a monstrous version of her former self, wholly dominated by the will of the Overmind.
