Skaarj of Na Pali

This is a renegade clan of Skaarj, exiled from the Empire after proposing a preposterous plan to rapidly expand Skaarj military strength by genetically altering the Skaarj biology to breed in a way similar to insects.

This clan, now based on the planet of Na Pali, is in many ways just like the normal Skaarj. The major difference is that they are constantly experimenting with genetic engineering, striving to become better warriors. They have indeed managed to change their reproduction cycle (which originally was analogous to the human one) - details below.

REPRODUCTION
The life of an individual of this particular Skaarj clan begins as an egg, layed by a Queen. The Queen is a huge, dangerous beast, sitting in the heart of their clan's Mothership, which the Skaarj guard fiercely. It is unclear whether it is sentient to any considerable degree, nor whether it has any other purpose except laying eggs (probably not).

From such an egg, a Pupae hatches. The Pupae, being an early stage in a Skaarj' development, bears little resemblence to a fully grown Skaarj. It is relatively small, around 1 meter in length, and has a black carapace. Overall, it resembles an insect more so than a reptile. It has powerful limbs that may propel it at great speed and grant it good leaping capability. Sharp claws and mandible-like teeth give the Pupae the ability to defend itself even that early in its life cycle.

The Pupae eventually grows into an adult Skaarj. It is not known whether there's some kind of intermediate form, nor anything else on the matter.

BIOTECHNOLOGY
The Skaarj are constantly tampering with bioengineering, never resting in their attempts to produce better and stronger warriors. The Brutes, an artificial race of hulking behemoths, are the result of such bioengineering. The Brutes are very tough - a marine who was killed by one claimed in his recorded log that he emptied an entire clip into one of these beasts, and it just kept coming.

It is also possible that the 'Warlord' - a rare type of creature that resembles a huge Skaarj with large, functional leathery wings, is also the product of genetic engineering.
