Slylandro

The Slylandro are a species which evolved in the outer atmosphere of a gas giant. To remain here, their evolution equipped them with a very complicated ballast bags. They can’t interact with materials, because anything they picked up would disturb the weight and density of the individual, causing it to fall into the dense core of the gas giant.
Because of this, they had no contact with other species until the Melnorme found them. In exchange for information on their species, the Melnorme gave the Slylandro a probe, which they could program to search for other intelligent life forms. This probe could make copies of itself by breaking down asteroids. The Slylandro realised they had to search a lot of space, so they set this replication feature to maximum. This had an unfortunate side effect. After the primary mission was accomplished (making contact with other species), the replication feature would override the program and try to break down the target, which was now a very surprised member of that species, into building components.

Luckily, this was stopped when a human captain located the Slylandro, and acquired the destruction code of the probes from them.
